There was a good turn out for the President’s Cup Singles tournament on Sunday, April 24th. Thirty two of the club’s best bowlers turned out to compete for the coveted honor and both greens were in action. Dave Breedon won for the third time in three years. Charlie Herbert came second, Phil Luth, third and Ivan Hyland, fourth. The play on the green was exciting and there were some interesting match ups. Chuck Muser had the play very well organized. Scott Weaver had a team of markers in red shirts to help the play go smoothly. The hospitality crew of Jane Wood, Sue Muser and Joan Phillips had the food under control. Everybody enjoyed the day. This tournament counts towards Bowler of the Year.
Coast League is in full swing and was held at NHLBC on Friday, April 15th. This regional competition is played through the season until August. It is being run this year by Dave Phillips. There are seven clubs from the regions participating-Long Beach, Santa Ana, the Groves, Casta del Sol, Laguna Wood, Laguna Beach and Newport Beach. Newport sends 2 teams of six players to each competition.
This past weekend the San Diego Lawn Bowling Club played host to the Southern California Triples men's Division tournament. And what a great event it was with delightful weather and festive competition on both days. 16 teams consisting of 48 players participated, including 14 of our own club members: Matt Bauchiero, Mert Isaacman, Clay Nolde, Brian Stewart, Brian Mulvaney, Ivan Hyland, Jim Hempe, Ted Farfaglia, Don Stewart, Scott Roberts, Charlie Herbert, Bruce Williams, Phil Luth, and Mike Ruggles.
On Saturday each team played three 14-end games with the hope of finishing in the top 8 and advancing to play again on Sunday. Which a handful of our players did. On Sunday morning, after first game wins, the team of Bruce, Phil and Mike ran into the US national team of Charlie, Scott and Aaron (Zangl). The game was well played by all, but Charlie was the difference maker more often than not and the national team earned a well played victory.
At the end of the weekend no one was surprised to find the national team of Charlie, Scott and Aaron undefeated and holding the championship trophy. Congrats! Bruce, Phil and Mike finished fourth.
The results for the this tournament, and all Division activity, can be found on the Division website http://swlawnbowls.org/.
The next men's Division event is the Southwest Open at Santa Anita from April 30-May 5.
Brian Mulvaney, Charlie Herbert and Brian Stewart came third in the Southwest Division's Amador Martinez Triples on April 10 in Oxnard. They tied for second and lost in the playoff.
There was a good turn out as we celebrated Lady’s Day last Wednesday with Spring hats.
Ginny wasn’t able to stay for the whole morning so Jim wore her hat and joined us at the table for lunch. What a sport! We remembered Kay Wurtz with a champagne toast. We do miss her lively face and her enthusiasm for life.
22 people enjoyed dining al fresco at Muldoon’s Irish Pub in April. A fun way to spend an evening with NHLBC members.
