Following the South Central Division Open, Bowls USA held a Skills Camp for 36 ladies from across our nation. Newport had 6 bowlers attending: Paula Bogenrief, Doreen Mayo, Norma Goodhart, Debby Gaal, Shelley Cohen and Linda Roberts. The two day camp was led by Jackie Tucker, with help from her coaches Jean and Keith Roney and David Callum, from Canada, Myra Woods, Pat Gonzales and Jan Hargraves, from USA. Each day there was an informational talk followed by drills or head reading involving the coaches. The dinner on Friday night was an opportunity to hear how each participant found lawn bowling.
Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club was well represented among the winners at the Vet-Novice Mix/Match Triples on Feb 27th at Laguna Beach.
Sean McMorris, Ed Quo and Robert Busciblio came first
Brian Stewart, Don Stewart and Brian Mulvaney came second
Mert Isaacman, Phil Luth and Chris Gaal came fourth
Reinie Kramer, Kim Heiser and Mike Ruggles came second
Well done Newport Harbor
Twenty four teams played in the annual Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club's Valentine’s Day tournament on Saturday, February 19th. Teams were chosen by two methods- the traditional way with a lady asking a man to form a team and for those without a partner, by blind draw. Each pair played 2 twelve end games. It was a brilliant southern California day- sunshine without the heat. Aren’t we lucky to live in this area and to be able to participate in such a wonderful club.
Join us for the next tournament, the annual St Patrick’s Day tournament, on March 26th. Pairs will be chosen in a blind draw and the tournament will count for the Bowler or the Year award.
27 people enjoyed Cappy's on Wednesday night at the monthly NHLBC InExpensive Dinner Club. A great big WELCOME to Joan Crudgington, John & Tracy Bodenmann and Bill Mills who joined us. A bit noisy at times (but all quiet when the food arrived...LOL), but great company and camaraderie was had by all. If you are interested, join us in March! Sign ups are always at the club.
Ray Norris organized a Super Bowl Party at the club with a special Super Bowling pregame and a potluck meal during the Super Bowl game. Forty two people played in the pregame - 7 teams of Carolina Panthers and 7 teams of Denver Broncos.
On Saturday morning, Ray Norris presented the Froggy Trophy to Ron Gill, the captain of 2015 Spring League championship team. The trophy will be a perpetual trophy for the Spring League and like Hockey's Stanley Cup, it will be shared among the members of the winning team for six weeks and displayed at the club for the rest of the year. Spring League will begin again at the end of May.
